Salt-spray test
This test is performed on different materials and products to see how well they withstand the damage inflicted by salt.
The salt spray test is an accelerated corrosion test that is applied to a variety of materials and products to assess their resistance to salt damage. This test is essential in determining the durability and quality of hose clamps and other components exposed to corrosive conditions.
How is the Salt Spray Test Performed?
The material to be tested, such as our Mikalor hose clamps, is placed in a special chamber where a sodium chloride (NaCl) solution is sprayed onto its surface. The purpose of this process is to determine whether the chosen coating is the most suitable to meet the established corrosion requirements.
It is important to note that this test does not take into account all the natural variables that cause corrosion, as the materials are exposed to very high levels of chloride (typically 5% NaCl). These conditions are rare and extreme, so therefore rarely encountered in normal outdoor exposure.
Detailed Test Procedure
- Sample Preparation: Samples, such as our hose clamps, are placed in a temperature controlled chamber (typically at 35°C).
- Application of salt solution: A 5% sodium chloride salt solution is sprayed onto the samples as a very fine mist.
- Test Time: The test can take from 24 hours to several days: The test can take between 24 hours and 1,000 hours, depending on the level of resistance being evaluated.
- Constant Conditions: Throughout the test, the temperature is kept constant and the samples are kept moist. In addition, they are rotated at regular intervals to ensure complete coating of the salt solution.
- Results: The time to the first appearance of oxidation is recorded. Other methods include recording the time until 5% of the sample surface is oxidised.
Standards and Certification
Mikalor hose clamps are salt spray tested in accordance with ASTM B117 (Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray). This standard ensures that our products meet the highest standards of corrosion resistance.
Materials and Coatings
Our hose clamps are manufactured from a variety of materials and coatings that provide different levels of corrosion resistance. The combination of these materials ensures that our clamps not only meet but exceed expectations in terms of durability and performance in corrosive environments.
Our results
Salt spray testing is crucial to ensure the quality and durability of Mikalor hose clamps. By following strict standards and applying specialised coatings, we ensure that our clamps offer maximum corrosion resistance, providing reliable and durable solutions for our customers.
